Educational CINP Mentor/Mentee Program

MISSION AND SCOPE

The CINP Mentor Program is a major educational CINP venture in accordance with the mission of the College to provide education in neuropsychopharmacology. The Mentor Program gears its efforts toward young and promising physicians, psychologists and basic scientists in parts of the world that may lack local experts to provide such guidance and mentoring to young and meritorious scientists.

The goal of the Program is to provide aspiring scientists anywhere in the world, but predominantly in Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, with expert guidance by senior and renowned scientists who are members of CINP and related organizations. The Program enlists the mentoring services of volunteers. The mentees must hold a terminal degree. They are mainly young psychiatrists, psychopharmacologists and neuroscientists engaged in neuropsychiatric or neuropsychopharmacologic research. The individuals to be mentored are selected on the basis of their potential to emerge from local experts to international caliber researchers. The contact with a world-class research expert, facilitated through the CINP Research Mentor Program, is expected to enhance the chances of achieving this goal.

The Program envisions three levels of mentoring activity. Under Level I, the mentor and mentee communicate via mail and telephone and may have opportunistic face to face encounters at international meetings. The mentor assists the mentee in a variety of areas, such as research design issues, data analysis and presentation, preparation and submission of manuscripts, membership in scientific societies and sponsorship, as needed. At Level II, the mentor invites the mentee to work in his/her laboratory for an agreed upon period of time to receive on site mentorship and training in a specified area of endeavor. Such an arrangement enables the mentee to acquire hands-on experience, for instance in specific research methodology, which the mentee can then bring back to his/her home institution. Funds to support this activity may become available by the mentor or through the mentee's home institution or government. Level III, or advanced mentoring, is reserved for mentees who have successfully completed three years of mentorship and wish to extend the mentoring relationship for a maximum of three more years. CINP cannot offer any financial support to mentors or mentees for the mentoring activity other than to establish the initial contact and facilitate and supervise the process as it evolves.

THE MENTORS

The mentor should be a distinguished scientist in the field of neuropsychopharmacology, neuropsychiatry or neuroscience, and should hold a professorial rank at his/her institution. A strict requirement of the Program is that the mentor should possess excellent knowledge of English whereas the mentee should possess at least a working knowledge of the English language. Prospective mentors should express their willingness to serve as mentors to the chairman or co-chairman of the Mentor Program. They may also contact the President or the Executive Secretary of CINP directly to express their interest in becoming a mentor. They should clearly indicate their area of expertise and the nature of mentoring assistance they are willing to provide. Mentors will be recognized for their contribution by receiving honorable mention at the CINP biennial meeting, a certificate of recognition and a reduction in the registration fees at the biennial meeting.

DURATION OF THE MENTORING RELATIONSHIP

Normally the mentoring relationship need not exceed three years. However, under certain circumstances, and with the approval of the mentor and the Program Chair, the mentoring relationship may be extended for up to an additional three years to provide the successful mentee with advanced mentoring in a specialized area of endeavor. Specific criteria must be met before a mentee will be approved for advanced mentoring.

MENTEE SELECTION PROCESS

A prospective mentee must discuss his/her interest in being accepted into the Program with a member of the CINP Education Committee or one of the officers of the Program who must grant pre-approval. The mentee then submits an application, a CV, a letter of support from his/her home institution and a statement of interest to the Chair (or co-chair) of the Program, who then grant final approval and seek the best possible mentor for the mentee.

An approved mentee is matched with a volunteer mentor following a screening procedure in an effort to achieve optimal compatibility. Although the main emphasis remains on research in neuropsychopharmacology, neuropsychiatry, and neuroscience, other areas may also be considered. The matching decision rests ultimately with the chairman, Professor Angelos Halaris, and co-chairman, Professor Peter Gaszner, of the Program.

OBLIGATIONS OF THE MENTEE

After a mentee has been accepted into the Mentor Program, he/she must establish contact with their assigned mentor. Such initial contact is expected to occur within the first two months. The mentee will be asked to submit to the Program Chair evidence that the relationship has begun. The mentee is expected to pursue the mentoring relationship actively and to file quarterly progress reports. Mentees must meet outcome measures of productivity under the mentoring relationship as specified in the Policies and Procedures Manual of the CINP Mentor Program. To initiate the process, prospective mentees should submit an initial inquiry to CINPMentor@lumc.edu or to CINP@cinp.org. An application form may be submitted electronically. Alternatively a paper application may be submitted by mail or by fax to one of the co-chairs of the Program or to CINP Central Office. An up-to-date version of the applicant's curriculum vitae should accompany the application form.
