Introduction

The 1st Clinic of Ophthalmology, Faculty Hospital of St. Ann in Brno was founded in 1921. Prof. Bohuslav Slavík became its first head. Prof. Jan Vanýsek, leading the clinic from 1956 to 1970, belongs to the most outstanding personalities in the history of the Clinic of Ophthalmology. In 1990 the Clinic was divided, the 1st Clinic of Ophthalmology led by Doc. MUDr. Svatopluk Synek, CSc. has been residing in the Faculty Hospital of St. Ann. The Clinic is profiled as a workplace consisting of the Opthalmologic Clinic and Ophthalmologic Biophysical Laboratory. Therapeutico- preventive care is based on the diagnostics and treatment of complicated ophthalmological diseases, including microsurgical therapy ( phacoemulsification, vitreoretinal surgery). Superconsiliary services for a large part of Moravia have been provided by workers of the clinic.
