Work day at Roche Ltd, Diagnostics Division, Prague for students and partners

Summary: Students will become acquainted with the organisation of sales and support units at Roche Ltd, Diagnostics Division and the work done in selected departments.
The six-hour work day is made up of a morning theoretical segment all together and an afternoon practical segment where the students will be divided up into groups. Each group will go through 3 to 4 departments where the students will get to know the selected area in practice.

The content of the work day will be thematically adapted to the students’ specialisation.

Work day oriented toward students from Medical and Science Faculties

This programme will emphasise areas relevant to students from the faculties of medicine and science: modern biochemical investigation, immunochemistry, molecular diagnostics, medical marketing, etc.
The definitive work day programme will always be adjusted with respect to the availability of lecturers and trainers for the given date.

Work day oriented toward students from University of Technology (VUT)

This programme will emphasise areas more relevant to students from VUT: systems and technologies, construction of analysers, management of IT processes, perianalysis, etc.
The definitive work day programme will always be adjusted with respect to the availability of lecturers and trainers for the given date.

Programme

A. Theoretical segment

Goals: To present the corporation and local representation of Roche Ltd, Diagnostics Division
Method: Presentation in Roche Diagnostics boardroom, 3rd floor, Karlovo náměstí 17, Prague

1. Introduction

  • Presentation of company, mission, corporate strategy and organisation structural of corporation (TP)
  • Presentation of Roche Ltd, Diagnostics Division, its strategy and organisational structure (TP)
  • Procedural chart, how does organisation at Roche Ltd, Diagnostics Division work (TP)
  • Overview of individual sales and support departments (TP)

2. Presentation of individual sales and support departments

  1. BA Professional Diagnostics – sales unit focused on supplying analytics, systems, reagents, consumables and provision of services to central biochemical hospital and commercial laboratories. The sales unit also provides products and services to hospital divisions where decentralised laboratory diagnostics takes place, as well as to ambulant care units of general practitioners and patients.
    • Marketing division – what the work of the marketing division is, marketing tools, customer support (RB)
    • Sales division – organisation and activity of the sales division, model project, sales tools (L©)

  2. BA Molecular Diagnostics, Applied Science, Tissue Diagnostics (D®)
    Applied Science
    - the field of life science and its connection to applied diagnostics in human and non-human genome, with emphasis on modern technology such as next-generation sequencing, chip technology and progressions in real-time PCR.
Molecular Diagnostics - the difference between "scientific PCR" and the requirements and approaches to the use of PCR (or real-time PCR) for IVD applications. Also discussed will be the issue of the current possibilities for IVD application in genomics for personalised healthcare with an emphasis on the legislative requirements.
Tissue Diagnostics - automation for exact formulations in IVD even in such a seemingly difficult-to-automate field like pathology. Also discussed will be the field of personalised medicine and the current possibilities of pathological laboratories (possibilities for immunohistochemistry or in-situ DNA hybridisation).

  3. Technical service division (MP)
Technical service will be presented as a division that provides first and foremost all technical services related to nearly the whole instrument portfolio at Roche, as well as other services that directly or indirectly relate to this activity.

  4. Logistics division and financial division (M©)
Support activity for the whole organisation including, above all, processing customer orders, invoicing, planning local warehouse supplies, storing and distributing goods in cooperation with various distributors, administration and archiving of data.

  5. Quality control processes Roche (LN)
What is ISO for in general, followed by its application at Roche, complaint management, IVD what is it, the role of SUKL, responsibilities of IVD manufacturers for post-sale monitoring (vigillance, FSN (Field Safety Notice) and FSCA (Field Safety Corrective Actions), user's responsibility to implement them – part of the Instructions for Use included by the manufacturer. When not observed, the manufacturer ceases to be liable for results and quality.

  6. Public Relations (OB)
Public relations means communication between the company and its external and internal surroundings
    • internal communication – goals, how we use channels of communication
    • external communication – goals, target groups, channels of communication, cooperation between divisions, cooperation with head office

  7. Medical Marketing (OB)
Medical Marketing is a collective term for all activities that constitute sales support or which aim to develop certain segments of the market for in vitro diagnostics where our company is active. Basically it concerns communicating the benefits of our company's products to the professional medical public and to lay persons.

  8. Assay Marketing (KM)
The goal of activities labelled assay marketing is primarily to create marketing plans, campaigns and related activities focused on support for the strategic product portfolio (in particular Het IA Reagents) as well as general support for introducing new markers and sales of reagents for Roche analytical systems.

  9. Marketing tools and media
    • Roche Diagnostics web presentation (KM)
    • Printed material – brochures, leaflets (KM)
    • Educational events for customers (RB)
    • Labor Aktuell quarterly (LN)

  10. Customer support
    • Research&Development criteria for development and modernisation of method portfolio (KM, IK)
    • The significance of CE/FDA certification, what it does and doesn't mean (KM)
    • Analysis, simulation, and proposal for laboratory solution using computer tools (PK)
    • Roche e-services (PP)
    • Trends in analyser development, SWA platform, harmonisation (PO)
    • Application support and problem solving in various analytical systems, our tools and mechanism for problem solving (support for GSS, Clarify Prisma and CM) and potential feedback from manufacturer PB, CAPA.

B. Practical segment

Goal: To put students in a real environment of routine work so they can envision the regular work regime at the company and the work done in selected departments
Method: Dividing students up into groups and continuing directly in the departments
The topics will be adjusted according to the students' specialisation and the possibilities of the members of Roche's resolution team.

  1. BA Molecular Diagnostics, Applied Science, Tissue Diagnostics (JV, LV, VH, NJ)
The goal of the practical segment will be to show that even "high-tech" products are subject to the laws of sales and marketing and that, in this regard, perhaps these highly sophisticated systems are not so different from regular consumer goods as it could seem at first glance

  2. Logistics (M©)
Demonstration of the processes for processing orders and customer requests and illustration of documentation.

  3. Technical service
Demonstration of service division and demo laboratories, processes, communication and management systems (MP)
Practical demonstration of construction of modern analytical system currently installed in a demo laboratory (cobas® 6000, cobas® 4000). Students will be able to take part in partial disassembly and assembly of several units and the workings of the system will also be explained to them (VF).
Practical demonstration of the workings of cobas® link, e-library, media and information communication tools (PP)
    Workplace safety (MP)

  4. Application support
Practical model case for problem solving of the connected functions of various analytical systems, demonstration of procedure and instruments

  5. Systems, technologies, reagents
    • Sample processing, technologies, technologies, methods, reagents
    • Interference and its possible impact on accuracy of results
    • Preanalytics - an important aspect of laboratory medicine
    • Sensitivity and specificity of methods
    • The importance of external quality control
    • Relationships and uncertainties
    • Proper handling of reagents
