COMMENTARY
Practices in health care
Except the practices within the framework of individual subjects are all students obliged to go through additional practice training:
1) Vacation Practice Trainings in district hospitals:
· Vacation practice after the 4th semester includes 2 weeks of practice (2 weeks at clinic of internal medicine or 2 weeks at some clinic of surgery). Students get acquainted with the work of nurses and health care assistants.
· Vacation practice after the 6th semester includes 1 week of practice in primary care.
· Vacation practice after the 8th semester includes 2 weeks of clinical practice in internal medicine and 2 weeks of clinical practice in surgery.
· Vacation practice after the 10th semester includes 2 weeks of clinical practice in obstetrics and gynaecology.
2) Pre-graduation Practice in the 11th and 12th semester.

Physical Training
In the 1st - 4th semesters students can enrol on a course of Physical Training in an extent of 2 hours per week. They can choose from university courses (see - page 30)

Elective courses
In addition to obligatory courses students can enrol on elective courses. These include elective lectures, elective courses, and selective clinical courses. Information on these possibilities is given in the study plans for the respective study years.

Enrolment into the 2nd semester
Enrolment into the 2nd semester is conditional upon obtaining 15 credits. The student has to enrol on all of the obligatory courses. Enrolment on all continuing courses is conditional upon obtaining course-unit credits in the autumn semester.
In case that the student has not obtained course-unit credits in Medical Chemistry and Biophysics in the examination period of 1st semester and s/he has not used up the examination terms yet, then s/he can take examinations in the examination term of the spring semester.

The elective course VSVT0211c is recommended for students with insufficient computer literacy. Elective course is held only when more than 5 students enrol on it. When a student enrols on an elective course, s/he is obliged to visit the instruction. This is a prerequisite for obtaining the course-unit credit.

INSTRUCTION IN THE SECOND YEAR - 3rd semester
Enrolment into the 3rd semester
The condition for enrolment into the 3rd semester is, in accordance with the accreditation materials, the obtainment of all course-unit credits from the obligatory courses of the 1st and 2nd semesters (passing all examinations) with the exception of Biochemistry I. The student who does not fulfil this requirement loses the right to enrol according to Art. 15 par. 1b of the Rules for Studies and Examinations.
The remedial terms for the Biochemistry I exam can be transferred into the examination period of the autumn semester. If the student passes the exam, the credits are included into the 2nd semester.
The student enrols on all of the obligatory courses of the 3rd semester.

INSTRUCTION IN THE SECOND YEAR - 4th semester
Enrolment into the 4th semester
Obtaining at least 15 credits from the 3rd semester is a prerequisite for the enrolment. The student enrols on all of the obligatory courses of the 4th semester. Enrolment on a continuing course (Physiology II) is conditional upon obtaining the credit-course units from the practicals and seminars of Course I. The remedial terms of the Histology II and Anatomy II exams can be transferred into the examination period of the 4th semester. If the student has not passed the exam in Biochemistry I, s/he must enrol on the course repeatedly. Passing the exam in Biochemistry I is a prerequisite for registration for the exam in Biochemistry II.

INSTRUCTION IN THE THIRD YEAR - 5th semester

Enrolment into the 5th semester
The condition for enrolment is obtaining at least 15 credits from the 4th semester. Another condition is, in accordance with the accreditation materials, the passing of at least three exams included in the curricula for the 3rd and 4th semesters.
Prerequisites for enrolment on courses of the 5th semester:
Pathological Anatomy and Pathological Physiology - passing the exams in Anatomy, Histology, Biochemistry II, and Physiology.
Clinical Examination in Surgery - passing the exam in Anatomy.
Clinical Examination in Internal Medicine - passing the exams in Physiology and Biochemistry II.
The student can enrol on the obligatory courses of the 5th semester provided that s/he has passed the prerequisite exams. If the examination in Neuroscience is missing, s/he can transfer the unused terms into the examination period of the 5th semester, or s/he may enrol on the course repeatedly in the 6th semester.
If there are at most two examinations missing in the obligatory courses of the 3rd and 4th semesters, the student re-enrols on the missing 3rd-semester courses plus the "permitted" obligatory 5th-semester courses so that s/he may obtain at least 15 credits in the semester and may pass the repeated examinations.
In case that there are more than two exams missing in the 3rd and 4th-semester obligatory courses, then, in accordance with the accreditation materials, Art. 15 par. 1b of the Rules for Studies and Examinations shall be applied.

Enrolment into the 6th semester
Passing the examinations in the enrolled repeated courses of this semester and obtaining 15 credits in the 5th semester are prerequisites for the enrolment into the 6th semester. Unused dates of examinations in the non-repeated courses may be transferred into the examination period of the 6th semester.

The vacation practical training after the 6th semester includes 1 week of practice in primary care.

INSTRUCTION IN THE FOURTH YEAR - 7th and 8th sem.
Beginning from the 7th semester, instruction in the individual courses is organised in one- or two-week blocks. The seminars, practical training and bedside teaching are concentrated in morning blocks of a daily duration of six hours. Obligatory lectures are held in the afternoon from 13:30, elective lectures are usually held late in the afternoon or in the evening.
In one-semester courses, lectures will only be held in the autumn semester. Examinations may be taken after completion of the prescribed instruction in the respective course also in the course of the semester.

Enrolment into the 7th semester
The prerequisites for enrolment on the obligatory courses of the 7th semester include:
· obtaining at least 15 credits in the 6th semester;
· passing exams in the repeated courses.
· In accordance with the accreditation materials, passing examinations in the courses of Pathological Physiology and Pathological Anatomy is a prerequisite for enrolment on all courses of the 7th and 8th semesters with the exception of Medical Psychology, Diagnostic Imaging, Epidemiology, and Clinical Genetics. If the student has passed exams in the above-mentioned prerequisites, s/he may enrol in all obligatory courses of the 7th semester. If s/he misses exams in the courses of Clinical Examination in Surgery and in Internal Medicine, the unused dates may be transferred into the examination period of the 7th semester.
If the student has not obtained credits for the exams in Pathological Physiology and Pathological Anatomy, , s/he re-enrols for the course/s, along with the above-mentioned courses of the 7th semester for which it is not a prerequisite (Medical Psychology, Diagnostic Imaging, Epidemiology, and Clinical Genetics).
If any other exams are missing besides Pathological Physiology, Pathological Anatomy, and Clinical Examination in Surgery and in Internal Medicine, then, in accordance with the accreditation materials, Art. 15 par. 1b of the Rules for Studies and Examinations shall be applied.
The student who had not enrolled on Pathological Physiology and Pathological Anatomy in the 5th and 6th semesters has to enrol on these courses in the 7th and 8th semesters. S/he shall also enrol on the remaining courses of the 5th and 6th semesters, and may enrol in each of the semesters on at most two obligatory courses of the 4th year of study, if the missing exams are not a prerequisite for them (Medical Psychology, Diagnostic Imaging Methods, Epidemiology, Clinical Genetics) If the student fails to pass the exams in Pathological Physiology or Pathological Anatomy, s/he has to re-enrol on the courses. However, s/he cannot enrol on any other obligatory course for which these two courses are barrier ones. S/he has to obtain the required number of credits for the completion of elective courses at the MU Fac. of Medicine, or of selected courses offered by the other faculties.

The course becomes obligatory after its entry in the course-unit record book.
An elective course is held only when more than 5 students enrol on it. When a student enrols on an elective course, s/he is obliged to visit the instruction. This is a prerequisite for obtaining the course-unit credit.

INSTRUCTION IN THE FIFTH YEAR - 9th and 10th sem.

The system of study in blocks continues. The seminars, practical training and bedside teaching are concentrated in morning blocks of a daily duration of six hours.
Obligatory lectures are held in the afternoon from 13:30, elective lectures are usually held late in the afternoon or in the evening.

In one-semester courses, lectures will only be held in the autumn semester. Examinations may be taken after completion of the prescribed instruction in the respective course also in the course of the semester.

Prerequisites for enrolment into the 9th and 10th semesters
The prerequisites for enrolment on the full extent of obligatory courses of the 9th and 10th semesters include in accordance with the accreditation materials:
· obtaining all of the course-unit credits;
· passing the examination in Pharmacology;
· obtaining credits for at least six examinations of the 7th and 8th semesters. Unused dates of one examination (Forensic Medicine, Stomatology, Epidemiology, Clinical Genetics) may be transferred into the 9th semester.
Passing the exam in Pharmacology is a prerequisite for enrolment on all the obligatory courses of the 9th and 10th semesters with the exception of the following courses: Infectious Diseases, Dermatovenereology, Intensive Care Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Oncology. The course-unit credit in Infectious Diseases I is a prerequisite for enrolment on Infectious Diseases II; the course-unit credit in Dermatovenereology I is a prerequisite for enrolment on Dermatovenereology II, and course-unit credits in Surgery I and II are prerequisites for enrolment on Surgery III.
If the student has not passed the examination in Pharmacology and s/he does not miss more than two other exams, s/he may re-enrol on the missing courses; along with them s/he may enrol on at most two permitted courses of the 9th and two of the 10th semester if the missing courses are not prerequisites for them. If the student misses more than three examinations of the 7th and 8th semesters, then, in accordance with the accreditation materials, Art. 15 par. 1b of the Rules for Studies and Examinations shall be applied.

INSTRUCTION IN THE SIXTH YEAR - 11th and 12th sem.

Prerequisites for enrolment into the 11th semester
The prerequisites for enrolment into the 11th semester include, in accordance with the accreditation materials, obtaining at least 30 credits and passing all of the examinations for the two preceding semesters. Unused dates of one examination (Infectious Diseases, Intensive Care Medicine, Oncology, Preventive Medicine) may be transferred into the 11th semester.
If the student lacks credits for 2 to 3 exams of the 9th and 10th semesters, s/he may re-enrol on the respective courses, together with Family Medicine.
Pre-graduation Practical Training (11th and 12th semesters)
The pre-graduation practical training is completed in continuous blocks of a prescribed number of weeks (30 hours a week). The students are assigned for the pre-graduation practical training according to dates and workplaces. In Internal Medicine they may arrange one week of practical training at some other department of internal medicine. They may register for the last State Doctorate Examination (SDE) after they have passed all of the obligatory exams and colloquia of the 1st to 11th semesters.

***) It is possible to arrange individual consultations in the Department of Social Medicine and Health Care Administration and in the Department of Preventive Medicine two weeks before the term of SDE in the course of Public Health.
SDE (The State Doctorate Examination) in Paediatrics and SDE in Internal Medicine can be taken after the student has passed the examination in Internal Medicine.
Repetition of the SDE: In the 13th or 14th semester the student may re-enrol for at most two SDEs, provided that s/he has obtained credits for all of the obligatory courses of the 9th and 10th semesters.
