Foreigners can study General Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University in Brno. The curriculum lasts 6 years and is concluded with the degree of "Medicinae Universae Doctor" (MUDr.) (= M.D., Doctor of Medicine). The language of instruction is English.
The basic general conditions of admission: Every foreign student must have passed successfully at least 4 years of studies at a secondary school (high school) closed by a school-leaving examination. A survey of his or her secondary school results and a school-leaving certificate are required. The students are accepted on the basis of written entrance examinations in the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The entrance examinations take place in Brno in June and September. Foreign citizens coming from faraway countries and applying for admission individually can be admitted without entrance examinations. However, they have to take into account that a good knowledge (British A-level) of the above-mentioned subjects of the entrance examination is an essential prerequisite for a successful study at the Faculty of Medicine.
Application forms may be requested from the Department of Study Affairs or are obtainable on the Web pages of the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University in Brno (http://www.med.muni.cz/studium/indexa.html).
The English study of General Medicine costs 8,000 EURO per year (each year of study consists of two semesters). This sum holds for those who pay the tuition fee for the whole relevant academic year only and their money arrives on the account of Masaryk University no later than 31st August . The tuition fee can also be paid in two parts. It means that the student can pay extra for each semester. In this case the price is raised by administration expenses, and thus each semester of General Medicine in English costs 4,250 EURO (altogether 8,500 EURO for a whole year of General Medicine). The first part has to be paid no later than 31st August . The conditions for admission and studies are given by the contract that is concluded by the Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine individually with every foreign self-paying applicant at enrolment. This contract also includes an agreement that all foreign students must respect the Rule of Studies and Examinations, and the Disciplinary Rule of the Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine. They are obliged to go through the general tuition and pass examinations in the Czech language by the end of their first, second, third, and fourth years of studies. This is necessary in order that, once they have entered the clinical departments, they may be able to communicate with patients. They may then decide whether they wish to go through their 5th and 6th years of studies in English or Czech. The applicants have to send us the following documents by post till July 2005:
All the copies must be verified by a notary public. The stamp and signature of the notary must be original. If the certificates are not in English, the original of an attested translation by an authorised expert must be enclosed. Faxes are not accepted. Application forms which are filled in incorrectly and incompletely, or which lack any of the above-mentioned materials, are not accepted, either. As soon as the Faculty of Medicine has received all of the above-mentioned papers you will be provided with all available information about the entrance examination and enrolment for studies in the academic year 2005/2006. The students applying for remission of the entrance examination will also receive all the documents necessary for clearing a temporary stay in the Czech Republic, that is, a decision on probationary admission at the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University and a certification of accommodation in the Students' Halls of Residence (see also Clearing a temporary stay in the Czech Republic: For new students only). It is necessary to apply for the clearing of a temporary stay at the Czech Embassy in your home country as soon as possible (it takes about two months), so this document should be obtained before travelling to the Czech Republic. Decision on probationary admission at the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University will be changed to regular admission after the enrolment to the Faculty. The Czech Republic does not provide any social benefits to foreign citizens in the course of their university studies. Scholarships and subsidies of the Czech Republic for accommodation in the students' halls of residence or for meals in students' refectories cannot be provided to foreign self-paying students. The students have to support themselves totally when studying, including full payments for accommodation and meals. The expenses of foreign students for accommodation in the students' halls of residence (one room for two or three students) are about 100 EURO per month, the amount being subject to change due to economic situation, while the meals (3 times a day) in an academic refectory cost about 5 EURO per day. Faculty of Medicine Masaryk University requested the U.S. Department of Education for eligibility to participate in federal student financial aid programs. Review of our application is in process. Enrolments for studies 2005/2006 are on 14th-16th September 2005 at 9:00-11:00 (Department of Study Affairs at 2nd floor; Medical Faculty of Masaryk University; Komenského nám. 2; Brno). The autumn semester in the academic year 2005/2006 starts on 19th September 2005 and the beginning of official accommodation in the student's halls of residence of Masaryk University is 17th September 2005. Students have to take out insurance individually with any health insurance company in their home country or with the General Health Insurance Company in the Czech Republic or elsewhere, where they have to pay for all the health care themselves. Only very limited basic health care is granted to students coming from countries contracted by the Czech government.
