A weekend full of professional news and workshops for future dentists

This year, dental students from all over the Czech Republic once again had the opportunity to spend the weekend at the Congress of Dental Students and expand their knowledge through lectures by leading dentists, participate in one of eight practical workshops and learn about innovations and modern technologies in the field of dentistry through the stands of our sponsors. The event also provided a meeting point for students across faculties to make new contacts and share their experiences with future colleagues.

The Congress of Students of Stomagology was opened with an introductory speech by the President of the Association of Students of Dentistry Kristýna Št'astná and the main organizer of this year's Congress Natálie Št'astná. The Vice Dean for Dentistry of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. MUDr. Lydia Izakovičová Hollá, Ph.D., also came to welcome the participants to Masaryk University for which we would like to thank her from heart. The congress was held on 15 and 16 March 2025 at the Bohunice University Campus and was attended by 350 future dentists.

The professional program then began with a lecture by Michal Novosad, MDDr., a certified member of ČADE and author of courses dealing with autotransplantation and interdisciplinary cooperation in dentistry. Among other things, the doctor spoke about the advantages and disadvantages of dental implants and autografts and outlined the indications for these treatments. This was followed by a lecture by Jan Stanek, MD, PhD, who shared his clinical experience with the participants in a lecture on hard and soft tissue reconstruction of the alveolar ridge. In the afternoon, Michal Augustin, M.D., graduate and postgraduate student at the Jessenius Medical Faculty in Martin, Slovakia, took the floor and prepared a lecture for the students entitled Initial Examination and Patient Plan. The invitation was also accepted by Charlotte Petrova, MD and MDD, who specializes in aesthetic medicine and maxillofacial surgery. In her lecture, she gave the students a closer look at various aesthetic procedures, such as the application of botulinum toxin or filler materials in the facial area. The last lecture of the Saturday day was Hypodontics of the lateral incisor, which was presented to the students by Michal Hasala and Lucia Mravcová.

A distinguished guest of the Congress was also the President of the Czech Chamber of Dentistry doc. MUDr. Roman Šmucler, CSc., who addressed the participants and completed the Saturday programme with a short greeting. The associate professor also attended the evening Dental Students' Ball and the students had the opportunity to meet him personally on this occasion. The Czech Chamber of Dentistry was also a financial supporter, for which we would like to express our sincere thanks.

Parallel to the afternoon lectures, professional workshops led by experienced physicians took place in the Simulation Centre of the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University. The topics were varied and the participants had the opportunity to choose from different areas of dentistry. We were introduced to the world of conservative dentistry by the workshop Different techniques of second class solution by Artem Kharchenko, MDD, or the workshop of Jan Brindza, MD, who prepared practical tips for students on matriculation. Machine endodontics and working with an operating microscope was the focus of MDDr. Petr Kučera. For prosthetics enthusiasts, the workshop of Jan Stan, MDDr., entitled Fixed Prosthetics and 3D Printing was certainly the right choice. Practical training of splinting during periodontal treatment was given to students under the guidance of MDDr. Adela Halusková. Those interested in surgery had a choice of two professional workshops. Surgical suturing and the application of injection anaesthesia were taught by Lea Szwedová, MDDr., while bone augmentation and the sinus lift method were taught by Jürgen Powalka, a representative of Meisinger. We must not forget the workshop of Petr Šikula, MDDr., who introduced us to the world of imaging methods.

In addition to the professional programme, the Saturday day also included the already mentioned Dental Students' Ball, whose smooth course was mainly due to its main organizer Eliška Jandová. This year, the Ball was held in the beautiful premises of the Babylon Centre, whose total capacity can accommodate up to 700 guests. Tickets for the ball were available not only for Congress participants but also for the public. In addition to live music and dancing, there was a professional and non-professional raffle with valuable sponsorship donations. Winners could take away from the ball, for example, an iPad from Dental Progres or magnifying glasses from Henry Schein.

Sunday's professional program began with a lecture entitled The Most Common Mistakes in Endodontic Treatment by Jan Kubeček, MD, one of the founders of the Rosmarin Dental Center, who is also known to many from the YouTube platform as one of the faces of the Dental Canal channel. The first lecture was followed by Lenka Černá, MDDr., who, in addition to pedostomatology, also focuses on child psychotherapy and counselling for parents. In her lecture, she introduced the audience to procedural care in paediatric dentistry and emphasised the importance of a sensitive approach and work with paediatric patients. After the lunch break, Jan Stibal, MD, a certified member of ČADA and ITI (International Team for Implantology), presented his work. Dr. Stibal prepared a lecture for the students on interdisciplinary cooperation in adolescents with developmental dental disorders, in which he introduced us to four patients whom he has helped change their lives for the better in his office. The final guest of the Congress was Jan Brindza, MD, who focuses on the fabrication of fillings in his practice and places particular emphasis on an ideally reconstructed point of contact. He presented his knowledge in the field of matrixing in his lecture.

Throughout the weekend, the professional programme was interspersed with breaks during which participants could relax, visit the stands of the event partners, take part in various competitions or recharge their batteries in the Relax Zone prepared for the students by the Petramed Clinic. Desserts, coffee and a lunch menu were also available. The catering was provided by Bistro Patyzón in Brno, which we would like to thank for their professional work.

Special recognition goes to the team of organizers from the Dental Students' Association, who devoted many months of intensive work to the preparation of this student congress. We also thank all the guest speakers who accepted our invitation and contributed to the professional growth of future dentists by their participation.

Thanks also go to all the sponsors, especially the general partner Kavo, who made the whole event possible. In addition to financial support, they also donated products for gift packages and prizes for the raffle, which greatly enriched the program.

Finally, we would like to thank all those who participated in this year's Congress of Dental Students. We appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to educate yourself in our beautiful field beyond the normal coursework. We hope you enjoyed the event and we look forward to future editions!

On behalf of the organizing team,
Kateřina Medřická
