June 2025 in Science at our faculty
We bring you a selection of the most interesting things in science and research at our faculty in the first summer month.
The third annual Alumni Day at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, attracted over two hundred participants. Half of them received a symbolic commemorative diploma from the Dean.
Warm embraces, tears of emotion, expressions of respect, and amazed looks. Alumni Day at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, was once again full of emotion and human fates, many of which crossed paths again after fifty long years. “I asked her, ‘And which one are you?’ Even though we used to live together in the dorms,” one participant laughed, sharing how she didn’t recognize her best friend from university days. They had a lot to talk about – they hadn’t seen each other since graduation and had traveled to Alumni Day from different corners of the country. Meanwhile, another pair sitting at a nearby table over coffee promised to stay in touch at least by phone or email – and, if all else failed, to meet again next year at their alma mater…
This year marked the third Alumni Day since the tradition was renewed at the Faculty of Medicine. In addition to the joy of reconnecting, a major draw for participants was the ceremonial jubilee graduation – the Golden Ceremony for the class of 1975 and the Silver for those who graduated in 2000, the first year of the new millennium. In both categories, over hundred of participants registered for the event, receiving symbolic commemorative diplomas from Dean Martin Repko and Vice-Dean Eva Brichtová. “I’m pleasantly surprised by how many orthopedic colleagues joined us this year,” remarked the Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Spine Surgery at MU Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Brno.
Naturally, smaller groups formed based on specialization or former study circles during tours of faculty facilities, especially the Simulation Center and the Anatomical Museum. For most attendees, the visit to the modern simulated hospital was a completely new experience, while stepping into the museum instantly brought back memories of countless hours spent studying a subject that strikes fear into the heart of every med student, no matter the generation. Anatomy simply holds a firm place in every doctor's story—along with unforgettable classroom scenes: “Oh my God, these display cases are still the same!”
The afternoon part of Alumni Day took place in the conference areas of the University Campus Library, where after a lecture on the use of artificial intelligence in medicine, given by Associate Professor Daniel Schwarz from the Department of Simulation Medicine, participants could fully indulge in reminiscing and sharing stories. As in previous years, the event was supported by the Masaryk University Archive, the Lifelong Learning Division in collaboration with ALUMNI Point, and student associations. “It was a very pleasant gathering and an emotional experience. It's amazing to see the progress over the past 25 years and the opportunities students now have at the faculty. Do we already know the date for next year? My former colleagues and I would love to keep this tradition alive and continue meeting regularly,” summarized Dr. Messner, who traveled all the way from Germany to attend.
And so, there’s only one thing left to say: See you again in June 2026!

The team from the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University brought home a bronze medal from the prestigious international SimUniversity 2025 competition in Valencia, Spain! Exceptional performances came from MUDr. Daniel Diabelko, MUDr. Matúš Surovčák and MUDr. Jiří Holek – all three recent graduates of General Medicine – together with student Barbora Horniaková, who is heading into her final year. The competition challenged not only their expertise and rapid decision-making, but also gave the whole team unforgettable experiences, including the real-life rescue of a human being.
