Light Helps Retinal Cells Mature, Yet Scientists Have So Far Overlooked It in Laboratory Models

Although the retina in our eyes serves to detect light, laboratory models of the retina paradoxically spend most of their development in darkness. A new study by scientists from the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University shows that light itself promotes the maturation of the retina’s light-sensitive cells – photoreceptors. The findings could contribute to better modeling of inherited eye diseases and to the testing of new drugs.
