Professor Ondřej Slabý from the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University has become a laureate of the South Moravian Region Award. He was recognised for outstanding achievements in molecular oncology, the development of precision medicine, and his long-term contribution linking cutting-edge research with patient care. He received the award on 12 May 2026 in Brno, alongside other individuals whose work significantly contributes to the region's development.
The South Moravian Region Award is presented annually to individuals whose work has an exceptional impact on science, society, or public life. This year’s laureates were notably dominated by representatives of the scientific community, including a member of the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University.
Professor Slabý was nominated and awarded for his outstanding results in molecular oncology, for advancing precision medicine, and for his significant influence on the research, clinical, and innovation environment both in the region and across the Czech Republic. He is widely recognised internationally as a leading figure in biomedical research. In his scientific work, he focuses on cancer genomics and non-coding RNA molecules, including their applications in cancer diagnosis and treatment. As head of a research group at CEITEC Masaryk University and Director of the Institute of Biology at the Faculty of Medicine, he consistently bridges top-level research with everyday clinical practice.
The impact of his work extends beyond academia, significantly contributing to tangible improvements in cancer care. This is exemplified by the Centre for Precision Medicine at the University Hospital Brno, which Professor Slabý has led scientifically from its inception. The centre represents a unique integration of advanced biomedical research with daily patient care.
The award also highlights the important role of the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University in biomedical research and its ability to connect science with clinical application. Professor Slabý’s work is an inspiration to students, early-career researchers and clinicians, demonstrating that world-class medicine developed in Brno has a real impact on the quality of healthcare both in the Czech Republic and internationally.
