Proposals for New Associate Professors and an Honorary Doctorate for a World-Renowned Expert

Members of the Scientific Board of the Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine met for their final session of the year at the Simulation Centre. The key agenda items included the discussion of three habilitation procedures and a proposal to award an honorary doctorate to the dean of a prestigious American medical school.

Members of the Scientific Board of the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University (MU), met for the last session of the year on November 27, 2025, at the Simulation Centre of the Faculty of Medicine. The agenda included three qualification procedures.

The first item presented to the Scientific Board was a proposal to award an honorary doctorate in medical sciences from Masaryk University to Professor Jakub Tolar, MD, PhD, Dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School, USA, and a renowned expert in blood and bone marrow transplantation. Professor Tolar is an internationally recognised physician-scientist, known primarily for his advances in the treatment of hematopoietic diseases, particularly bone marrow failure syndromes. He also focuses on connective tissue disorders and metabolic diseases. His research is centred on developing genomic and cellular therapies for these rare conditions. The Scientific Board of the Faculty of Medicine approved the proposal, which will now be submitted to the Rector of Masaryk University.

Subsequently, a proposal was submitted to appoint Věra Špatenková, MD, PhD, Head of the Neurocenter ICU at the Regional Hospital Liberec, as an Associate Professor in the fields of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine, and Algesiology. The Habilitation Committee Chairman, Professor Petr Štourač, MD, PhD, MBA, LL.M., FESAIC, presented the proposal. The candidate delivered a lecture to the Scientific Board on the topic "Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Infections in Brain and Spine Diseases."

The second qualification procedure involved a proposal to appoint Marek Dostál, MSc, Ing., PhD, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biophysics and the Department of Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine, MU, and University Hospital Brno, as an Associate Professor in the field of Radiology. The Habilitation Committee Chairman, Professor Miroslav Heřman, MD, PhD, presented the proposal. The candidate presented a lecture to the Scientific Board titled "Analysis of Diffusion-Weighted MR Imaging."

This was followed by a proposal for the appointment of Luboš Nachtnebl, MD, PhD, an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, MU, and Head of the 1st Department of Orthopaedics at the Faculty of Medicine, MU, and St. Anne's University Hospital in Brno, as an Associate Professor in the field of Surgery. The proposal was presented by the Habilitation Committee Chairman, Professor Martin Repko, MD, PhD. The candidate’s lecture was on "The Importance of All-Polyethylene Tibial Components in Modern Total Knee Arthroplasty."

The Scientific Board of the Faculty of Medicine recommended the appointments of Věra Špatenková, MD, PhD, as an Associate Professor in Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine, and Algesiology; Marek Dostál, MSc, Ing., PhD, as an Associate Professor in Radiology; and Luboš Nachtnebl, MD, PhD, as an Associate Professor in Surgery. All three proposals will be submitted to the Rector of Masaryk University.

Dean Repko congratulated Vice-Rector Pospíšilová on receiving the state decoration "For Merit in Science," which she accepted from the President of the Republic on the occasion of the national holiday on October 28.

In conclusion, the Dean expressed his sincere thanks to all members of the Scientific Board for their cooperation throughout the year. He wished everyone a peaceful and happy Christmas and a successful start to the new year. The next meeting of the Scientific Board will take place on February 28, 2026, at the Simulation Centre of the Faculty of Medicine.
