The Medicinal Plants exhibition attracted interest of locals and abroad visitors

Despite the heatwave, many interested visitors made their way to the Medicinal Herbs Centre during the 64th Medicinal Plants Exhibition. They were drawn by the blooming botanical garden and a panel exhibition titled Poppy, Cannabis, Drugs: Helpers and Tempters of Humanity.

Colleagues from other botanical gardens—such as those in Hradec Králové, Tábor, and Studenzen (Austria)—came to view the exhibition. Staff from the Personnel Office and the Communications and External Relations Office of the Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine also made sure not to miss it.

Following this year's exhibition, the guestbook contains messages not only in Czech but also in Slovak, Esperanto, English, Hungarian, and German. The visitor who traveled the furthest to the Medicinal Herbs Centre came from Philadelphia, USA. In terms of group size, the winner of a hypothetical contest would be the group of nearly eighty young people from the Young Gardener competition. Entries in the guestbook came from people from Klatovy, České Budějovice, Jihlava, Prievidza, and—of course—Brno, including specific neighborhoods such as Masarykova čtvrť, Líšeň, and Husovice.

The Medicinal Herbs Centre of the Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine specializes in the non-commercial cultivation of plants that are pharmacologically interesting, dietary, aromatic, dye-producing, or otherwise useful, as well as poisonous plants. It is located at Údolní 74, Brno, near the terminus of tram line 4 and the Náměstí Míru bus stop (line 68). The Medicinal Plants Centre is open on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with extended hours until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays from May through September.

A few messages from the guestbook for the 64th Medicinal Plants Exhibition:

“Thank you for a wonderful experience; hats off to the amount of work that goes into the maintenance. I come here every year, and it’s always delightful.”

“Thanks for the care you put into this. Wishing you plenty of rain.”

“A beautifully organised exhibition on poppies, cannabis, and other useful—as well as dangerous—plants. Plus, a rich display of the plants themselves.”

“I had no idea such a magnificent, inspiring place existed in Brno… I feel a bit like Alice in Wonderland.”

“Thank you for being here.”

“I am particularly interested in the poppy, including its role as a garden flower.”
