The project connects experts in gastrointestinal surgery, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery from our faculty with colleagues from foreign partner institutions – the University of Zagreb, Innsbruck Medical University, and Uppsala University.
Specialised summer schools are a key part of the project. During 2025, week-long Summer Schools of Surgery were held for individual surgical specialisations. The teaching took place primarily at the Institute of Anatomy and the Simulation Centre of the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University, focusing on linking clinical anatomy with practical surgical skills. The summer schools offered participants intensive practical training, work with anatomical specimens, and discussions of specific clinical cases. At the same time, they created a space for young surgeons to meet their foreign colleagues in person.
Another important activity is short-term internships abroad, during which young surgeons have the opportunity to spend a week at partner workplaces and familiarise themselves with their daily operations, teaching, and organisation of care.
In 2025, online professional meetings were also held for representatives of individual specialisations. They included presentations of interesting case studies, professional discussions, and sharing of experiences from clinical practice. Recordings of these meetings will be further used as teaching materials.
An integral part of SCALPEL 2.0 is also the systematic creation of educational videos. Last year, the first series of annotated recordings of surgical procedures, clinical anatomy lectures, and other teaching materials was created. Each participating specialisation plans to create a total of 18 videos over three years, and part of this goal was already achieved in the first year of implementation. All videos will be gradually made available on the MEFANET platform, where they will build on the successful outputs of the original SCALPEL project.
SCALPEL 2.0 builds on the success of the previous project and further develops both existing and newly emerging international collaborations. The involvement of workplaces from Croatia, Austria, and Sweden brings mutual inspiration not only in the field of education but also in the organisation of clinical work and teamwork.
The activities carried out in 2025 confirm that SCALPEL 2.0 significantly contributes to the development of the professional and practical skills of young surgeons, the improvement of their communication skills, and broader professional growth. In the long term, the project supports the improvement of surgical care quality and the strengthening of our faculty's international ties.
