At the Faculty, we consider equal opportunities as a necessary basis for the functioning of a modern academic institution. We strive to ensure that everyone - regardless of gender, age, health, family background or other life circumstances - has an equal opportunity to study, work and grow professionally. We believe that a quality and welcoming environment is created where diverse life situations are respected and where everyone has the space to develop their full potential.
In this article, we will therefore focus on how the faculty approaches the issues of gender equality, reconciling work, study and parenthood, and the rules that apply to recruitment and selection of employees.
Fair recruitment and selection of employees
At Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine, we strive to ensure that selection procedures are fair, high quality and open to all. We want every candidate to have an equal chance of success, as long as they meet the professional and qualification requirements - regardless of their background, gender or other individual characteristics.
In the recruitment and selection process, we place particular emphasis on:
The Faculty of Medicine has a clear and transparent selection process that all applicants can familiarise themselves with before applying. Candidates are evaluated according to predetermined criteria that ensure an objective, fair and professional process. In doing so, we follow the OTM-R (Open, Transparent and Merit-based Recruitment) principles recommended by the European Commission, which promote openness, transparency and selection on the basis of qualifications.
OTM-R pronciples
- Open – Each selection procedure is open to the public and open to all candidates. The Faculty actively reaches out to candidates not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad, thus promoting diversity and attracting top professionals.
- Transparent – Candidates have access to all relevant information about the procedure, including clearly defined evaluation criteria. We offer feedback after the selection process, which increases trust and clarity of the whole process.
- Merit-based – The selection is primarily determined by the candidates' qualifications, experience and potential. At the same time, the Faculty actively seeks to prevent discrimination and unconscious bias.
The faculty strives for a diverse and inclusive work environment. When selecting new colleagues, we focus exclusively on professional qualities and professional experience.
- Preventing bias - Selection committee members receive training that also focuses on recognizing and eliminating unconscious bias to make candidate evaluations as objective as possible.
- Promoting women in science - The Faculty actively promotes the levelling of gender imbalances in science and leadership positions and encourages women to apply for senior academic and scientific positions.
- International openness – We strive to attract international experts and offer them high-quality adaptation support to facilitate their integration into the faculty environment.
The Faculty supports the long-term professional development of its employees. Employees have the opportunity to participate in professional training, mentoring programs and other forms of education that help them improve their knowledge and skills and advance their careers.
The Faculty of Medicine has long strived to create a working environment in which employees feel respected, valued and have space for professional and personal growth. We emphasize equal access to employment opportunities, safe working conditions, flexible work arrangements and support at different life stages.
Through these steps, we strive to ensure that every applicant and employee has an equal chance of employment and that the faculty is an attractive and open working environment for professionals from the Czech Republic and abroad.

Reconsiling work, study and parenthood: promoting work-life balance
It is not always easy to combine work or study with caring for a family. The Faculty therefore offers specific measures to help maintain this balance:
- Flexible working conditions: we allow part-time, flexible working hours or teleworking - always depending on the nature of the position
- Support for student-parents: we offer individual study plans, consultation with the study department and support in planning studies
- Family-friendly activities: we provide information on childcare options, for example through playgroups or services in the local area.

Promoting gender equality: an environment where everyone can reach their full potential
Promoting equal opportunities is also about ensuring that women and men have the same opportunities for professional growth. The Faculty has therefore long been committed to this area.
- Analysis and monitoring: we regularly monitor the representation of women and men in teaching, research and management. The results help us to identify where we need to promote change.
- Supporting women in science: We offer events, training and workshops to support women academics and their professional development.
- Outreach: lectures, seminars and sharing of good practice help raise awareness of the importance of equality across the Faculty - with staff and students.
Gender equality at MU
Equal opportunities are not just a formal principle - they are a way to create a positive working environment. At the MU Faculty of Medicine, we strive to make good conditions a matter of course for everyone. When everyone has the same starting line, it creates a culture where people and great ideas thrive. Equal opportunity changes how we work, grow and live.
All of these measures and principles are important steps towards ensuring a safe and fair environment that enables the potential of all staff and students at the Faculty of Medicine to flourish.
