At the MU Faculty of Medicine, we strive to ensure that the academic environment is not only a place of education and research, but also a space based on respect, honesty, and trust. Ethics here is not a formal framework, but an everyday practice that protects both individuals and the institution as a whole.

Ethics at Masaryk University

Ethics at MU is not an abstract concept. It is firmly anchored in the MU Code of Ethics, which is binding for all members of the academic community. The Code defines basic principles, which include in particular:

These principles create a common framework of values and contribute to a safe and trustworthy academic environment.

Academic and scientific ethics: the foundation of credibility

At the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University, we view academic and scientific ethics as an essential prerequisite for high-quality teaching and credible research. It is not just a matter of following rules, but of taking a responsible approach.

In practice, this means in particular:

Since 2017, the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University has been a member of the European Network for Academic Integrity (ENAI), thereby committing itself to international standards of scientific integrity and the sharing of good practice.

Compliance with ethical rules is supervised by expert committees, in particular the MU Ethics Committee, the Ethics Committee of the MU Faculty of Medicine, and other advisory bodies. These bodies assess the ethical aspects of research, teaching, and other activities and ensure that, in the event of a suspected violation of ethical principles, there is a clear and fair procedure for protecting the rights of all parties involved.

Ethics in a time of new challenges

Ethical principles evolve alongside changes in the academic environment, technological advances, and social expectations. Masaryk University therefore continuously responds to new challenges and expands its ethical framework to reflect current practices.

Current topics include, for example:

Protection of rights at Masaryk University

Systematic protection of rights is also part of the ethical environment. Masaryk University creates conditions for students and employees to feel safe, respected, and treated fairly. Clear rules, support mechanisms, and transparent procedures for dealing with problematic behavior are in place.

The MU Ombuds plays a key role in this area. It functions as an independent institution that anyone who feels threatened by discrimination, bullying, unequal treatment, or other unethical behavior can turn to. The MU Central Rights Protection Office provides confidential counseling, support, and assistance in finding solutions—from informal consultations to recommendations for systemic measures.

Why talk about ethics and rights protection

As with bullying or hate speech, ignoring problems only makes them worse. Ethical principles and rights protection mechanisms ensure that every voice can be heard and that the university has the tools to deal with sensitive situations.

Ethics and rights protection are not a formality. They are an everyday part of academic life and one of the key prerequisites for trust, safety, and respect at our faculty.
