📢🎯 Invitation | SPARK Europe Webinar Series SPRING 2026
SPARK Europe Webinar Series | 6th May 2026 | 4-5 pm (CET) | Getting to market insight | Shane West (Head of Advisory at Aleap AS) | hosted by SPARK Norway
Even the shortest month of 2026 was not lacking in events in the field of science and research.
Achievments
Two young female scientists have been successful in the prestigious MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships competition. In the face of strong international competition in this year's Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions - Postdoctoral Fellowships competition, two postdoctoral researchers have been successful and will continue to develop their research projects under the guidance of scientists at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University. Annette ViVi Jacobsen has joined Lukáš Čajánek's research group at the Department of Histology and Embryology, while Debopriya Bose has joined Lumír Krejčí's research group at the Department of Biology. The award of two MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships represents international recognition of the quality of research carried out at our faculty and its position as a center of excellence in biomedical research.
SCIENCE INTO PRACTICE
Research that helps: personalised cancer treatment and better patient decision-making. On February 4, on the occasion of World Cancer Day, we published an overview article highlighting the most significant cancer-related projects our faculty is implementing. Cancer is one of the most common and serious diseases worldwide and is the second leading cause of death, right after cardiovascular disease. Our labs do basic and translational research focused on tumour biology and oncology. Research teams focus, for example, on the molecular mechanisms of cancer processes, the regulation of tumour suppressor proteins, the development of targeted therapies, the complex properties of the tumour microenvironment, mechanisms of resistance to therapies, the aggressiveness of cancer cells, and potential therapies affecting tumour migration and invasion.
article of the month
From among the excellent publications in international professional journals, we have selected an article by a team of authors from our faculty and the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute in Brno entitled Exploring motivations and barriers in prostate cancer screening: lessons from a volunteer-based MRI screening study, published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health. The study, part of the ProstaPilot project, examined why men (do not) decide to undergo modern prostate cancer screening. It showed that willingness to be screened is most strongly supported by good information about the disease, trust in doctors, and support from those around them, while fears about the examination, embarrassment, or practical obstacles can be barriers.

"The human touch is irreplaceable in our field. Czech rehabilitation is world-class precisely because we are used to touching patients, examining them by touch, and manually searching for problems. This is also due to the teaching method, in which students learn techniques on themselves from the beginning and later on real patients," says Associate Professor Filip Dosbaba, head of the Department for Rehabilitation at Brno University Hospital and MED MUNI, as well as the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at our faculty, in an interview with the magazine MF DNES.
let´s introduce
Dáša Bohačiaková's research group Neurobiology of the Development and Disease. At the Department of Histology and Embryology, a team led by a young scientist focuses on modelling nerve differentiation in vitro using human pluripotent stem cells. The goal is to understand the mechanisms of nerve induction and differentiation and to apply this knowledge to model/treat diseases of the central nervous system. Currently, scientists from this research team are using a range of neural models derived from human pluripotent stem cells, including 2D neurons, neural stem cells, and 3D brain organoids, with a focus on studying Alzheimer's disease and glioblastoma.
interesting events
What can you look forward to in March? The first spring month will be rich in events, including another Research Breakfast, as well as interesting lectures, conferences, and courses. You can find an overview of all events in the Event Calendar.
stetoskop podcast
In February, the Stetoskop podcast continued with two episodes from the series Lessons in Psychiatry. Doctors from the Department of Psychiatry at Brno University Hospital and MED MUNI spoke with our editor about transference and compassion.

Borderline personality disorder is the most common personality disorder. Its severity is compounded by a high rate of self-destructive behaviour; five to ten percent of patients exhibit strong suicidal tendencies. Treatment options are limited, and there is a shortage of psychologists and psychiatrists. To bring about change, a new spin-off company, EQUILIO, or the Czech Institute of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, was established. Its goal is to train professionals and expand the use of this method, which has been largely unavailable in the Czech Republic until now.
