success stories

The beginning of the new year brought several significant achievements for our scientists. The Department of Paediatric Oncology received a prestigious certification and was thus included among the ITCC centres. Three physicians associated with our faculty were ranked in Forbes magazine's 50 Best Doctors in the Czech Republic. The article by the authors from IHOK was ranked third in The Best of Leukemia 2024. Petr Lokaj from the Department of Pediatric Oncology received the Honorary Medal of the Czech Cancer Society for his lifetime contribution to pediatric palliative care. You can read more about the achievements of our students, academics and scientists here.

science into practice

The unique Brno outpatient clinic for undiagnosed paediatric patients focuses on patients with suspected genetic diseases who have not yet been diagnosed. Most of the patients are children under the age of five. In an interview with Reportér magazine, Kateřina Slabá, a doctor who was at the birth of the outpatient clinic, explained how she uses genetic tests and other procedures to try to give seriously ill children something that no one has been able to do before - a diagnosis. The BabyFox project, which aims to obtain rapid whole-genome sequencing results for patients with genetic diseases in neonatal and paediatric ICUs in the shortest possible time to speed up diagnosis, is also contributing to rapid diagnosis.

article of the month

A team of authors from the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine and other departments published an article on biliary drainage to help patients with biliary tract tumours. Drainage helps to reduce bilirubin levels and relieve symptoms of jaundice. The study analyzed data from 175 patients with extrahepatic CCA and looked for factors affecting survival after PTBD. It showed that patients with tumors larger than 5 cm and with metastases had a worse prognosis. In contrast, better survival was associated with lower bilirubin and CRP levels before surgery. A simple scoring system was developed to help estimate 3-month mortality with 86.3% confidence for excluding risk and 43.2% probability of correctly estimating high risk. The paper was published in the prestigious international journal Scientific Reports  published by Nature.

Joint research has revealed the secret of the skull, which has been used as a teaching tool at the UNESCO Primary School in Uherské Hradiště for generations. Scientists and pupils discovered that it was an officer of the Austro-Hungarian army. They were able to identify the remains in a project led by Dr. Miriam Nývltová Fišáková from the Department of Physiology. All the participants praise the mutual cooperation, where the students did the whole anthropometry, then with the students of the Faculty of Medicine of MU they calculated the height and sex and now they are working on the reconstruction of the face. The unique research and demonstration of citizen science in practice was reported by ČT24, MF Dnes, the websites of Deník, Blesk and many other media.

let´s introduce

Lumír Krejčí, head of the research group at the Institute of Biology. He also works at the Faculty of Science of MU. He focuses on the study of mechanisms of DNA replication protection during cell division. He is also co-organiser of the Mendel Lectures series, which regularly brings world Nobel Prize winners to Brno. He is also behind the Bioskop project, which regularly opens laboratories to primary and secondary school children. In July 2024, he became a member of the prestigious EMBO, an association of leading molecular biologists that promotes excellence in the life sciences in Europe and beyond. This prestigious community has more than two thousand members from all over the world.
