Here is an overview of the most interesting achievements in science and research at our faculty leading up to the summer break.
Achievments
Our faculty has reaffirmed its status as an institution of research excellence. In 2025, the Faculty and Masaryk University as a whole underwent their second national evaluation of higher education institutions. The Czech Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports has now published the evaluation results compiled by an international panel of evaluators. Both the faculty and the university received an overall grade of A, meaning “excellent.” This confirms our position among the leaders in Czech biomedical research. The international evaluation panel commended not only the quality of the research environment, systematic management, and strategic development of science, but also the structure of the doctoral program, internationalisation, greater involvement in European projects, and the implementation of recommendations from the 2020 evaluation.
SCIENCE INTO PRACTICE
The new EAS consensus documents represent a major shift in the prevention and treatment of lipid metabolism disorders. At the May congress of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) in Athens, two significant consensus documents were presented, co-authored by Tomáš Freiberger from the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergology at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University and University Hospital Brno and the Centre for Cardiovascular and Transplant Surgery in Brno. Both documents provide important updates in the field of the prevention and treatment of lipid metabolism disorders and are already generating significant attention from both the professional community and the media.

According to the Institute of Health Information and Statistics, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Czech men. However, according to researchers from the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University and the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute, not every tumour detected poses the same risk. While some require immediate treatment, others only need to be monitored over the long term. A report by Czech Radio explored how to distinguish between them, featuring Michal Standara from the Department of Imaging Methods at the St. Anne´s University Hospital and Miroslav Světlák, head of the Department of Medical Psychology and Ethics. The report also included an interview with Ondřej Májek from the Institute of Biostatistics and Analysis. You can listen to the entire segment, which was part of the program “Věda plus,” here.

Irena Koutná Research Group Cell and Tissue Engineering at the Deparmtent of Histology and Embryology is engaged incomprehensive research in the field of cell therapies, from understanding the function and natural behaviour of cells independently in cell culture and within tissue. These findings are put into context by using the biological dependencies studied to benefit cell therapies and regenerative medicine. At the level of adult cell studies, intensive research is being conducted onCAR-T cells for the treatment of solid tumours. A large part of the group's work is devoted to research on mesenchymal stromal cells for skin regeneration. Intensive research and development are also underway in the field ofhyaline cartilage regeneration.
