How was the year 2024 in research and development at our faculty?
Take a look at what the year 2024 brought in the field of research and development at the Faculty of Medicine MU. What awaits us in 2025? Take a short look back at the past year.
We bring you a selection of the most interesting things in science and research at our faculty in the first spring month of 2025
success stories
Dáša Bohačiaková received the Werner von Siemens Prize. The head of the research group at the Institute of Histology and Embryology received the Werner von Siemens Award for excellence in women's scientific work. The prestigious competition has been held by Siemens for 26 years. The award-winning scientist has long been involved in research on stem cells, cerebral organoids and neurodegenerative diseases. You can read more about the achievements of our students, academics and scientists here.
science into practice
The GEPROM Brain project is testing chips for more effective treatment of psychiatric diseases. At the Psychiatric Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine and Medical University in Brno, in cooperation with Essence Line, a new chip for safer and more effective pharmacotherapy of psychiatric diseases will be tested. The aim is to improve and personalise treatment in psychiatry based on the determination of more genetic polymorphisms using genetic chip technology. Thanks to cross-sector collaboration and support from GEPROM Brain from the OP TAK project scheme, this type of therapy is one step closer to being introduced into clinical practice.
article of the month
Nicola Silva's team has added another piece to the mosaic of research into the causes of infertility. A team of scientists led by the head of the research group at the Institute of Biology, Nicola Silva, has had a major breakthrough in research into the reduced or impaired function of the synaptonemal complex, which may be one of the causes of infertility. The paper by an international team of authors from the Max Perutz Labs at the University of Vienna, the University of Iowa and McGill University in Montreal was published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature Communications.
med muni in media
In March, the media footprint of our faculty was very diverse. The media paid attention to the principles of healthy eating, myths surrounding popular spring detoxes, tips on how to prevent colds, the first warning signs of heart failure, personalised medicine, how to prevent kidney disease and chronic intestinal inflammation. All of March's media coverage can be found here.
let´s introduce
Jan Křivánek, head of the research group at the Institute of Histology and Embryology. His team deals with basic aspects of developmental biology. He and his colleagues then use these to develop new approaches in regenerative medicine. They use ever-growing teeth as their main model system. These teeth have an extraordinary capacity for regeneration and repair and serve as an excellent model for studying stem cell niches, differentiation processes or hard tissue micro-formation. Three years ago, he and his colleagues also compiled an atlas of mouse tooth cells, categorised them, described how they function and, on that occasion, discovered several previously unknown cell types.
interesting events
What can we look forward to in April? For example, the AdvanceMed conference on modern technologies in healthcare, Reinhard Lührmann's lecture at the Mendel Lectures, the launch of the book Internal Medicine or another Research Breakfast. An overview of all events can be found in the Calendar of Events.
podcast stetoskop
Two episodes of the Stetocope podcast were released in March. The first one featured Bohumil, a dog therapist, and his owner Ondřej Rohleder, who work together at the Department of Paediatric Oncology. In the second podcast, we talked with the head of the Pediatric ENT Clinic not only about unique surgeries, the MEDEVAC mission in Africa, but also about his passion for beekeeping.
