achievements

In the next year, the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GA CR) will support a total of 7 projects of applicants from FM MU. For the first time ever, the faculty succeeded in the Postdoc Individual Fellowship Incoming scheme, which aims to bring outstanding foreign scientists or Czech scientists with long-term foreign experience to the Czech Republic and enable them to implement their own scientific programme. For 5 supported projects, FM MU is the principal investigator, and for 2 projects LF MU is the co-investigator.

science into practice

Scientists from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Medicine in Brno are building a unique biobank focused on the study of one of the most aggressive types of cancer, pancreatic cancer. Live cell lines from the biobank allow to recapitulate their development in laboratory conditions using advanced three-dimensional tissue models. These are helping to reveal the biological processes associated with cancer and, by linking them to clinical practice, are providing new opportunities for understanding and treating the disease.

article of the month

A team of scientists from the FM MU has described a new regulation of the cancer cells that cause malignant cutaneous melanoma. One of the most aggressive cancer diagnoses in the Czechia, up to 2,500 patients are treated each year. After several years of testing, the team around Stjepan Uldrian from the Institute of Biology published a study describing the importance of the eIF4F protein complex in cancer cells, and how it affects the ERK signaling pathway and cell growth and division. Published in one of the most cited scientific journals  Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Cancer research interviews for DVTV. In November, researchers from FM MU, who are involved in the activities of the Brno node of the National Institute for Cancer Research, gave interviews to this internet television. Lenka Zdražilová Dubská talked to the editor about how long it takes to develop drugs for cancer and about the future of anti-cancer therapies - personalised treatment. Zdeněk Andrysík then talked about the fact that cancer is a combination of several lesions at once and therefore it is impossible to find a universal cure for cancer.

let´s introduce

Zdeněk Andrysík, head of the Molecular Mechanisms of Cancer research group. Dr. Andrysík and his team at the Department of Biology at MU Faculty of Medicine focus on the research and development of new cancer treatment options targeting transcription factors that play a key role in tumorigenesis. The goal is to improve patient survival and quality of life through innovative, combined and targeted approaches with minimal side effects. The research addresses the need for more effective therapies to replace traditional chemotherapy. His team is also part of the National Cancer Research Institute, the largest ever cancer project in the country, linking 11 research institutions and 72 teams. You can hear more about the research and his experience abroad and back in Brno in our November Research Breakfast. He also gave an interview to DVTV

zajímavé akce

What can you look forward to in December? In addition to Christmas and pre-Christmas parties, you can look forward to another Breakfast with a Scientist, World Aids Week and lectures by international scientists in December. For an overview of all events, please see our events calendar.

podcast stetoskop

In November, two episodes of the Stetoskop podcast were released. On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, the Rector of Masaryk University, Martin Bareš, accepted the invitation and not only recalled his personal experiences from the revolution, but also revealed his plans for the future. The interview with Anna Vašků provided not only an insight into her life journey, but also proof that science can be not only a job, but also a deep mission and a source of joy.
