achievements

Šárka Pospíšilová received the Medal of Merit from Czech President Petr Pavel. On the occasion of the commemoration of the founding of the independent Czechoslovak state on October 28, Šárka Pospíšilová, head of the Department of Medical Genetics and Genomics and vice-rector of Masaryk University, received the Medal of Merit in the field of science. The scientist, who also works at CEITEC MU and Brno University Hospital, is a leading expert in genetics and molecular biology and is one of the popularisers of Mendel's legacy. Come and discuss with the laureate at the November Research Breakfast.

science in practice

Open healthcare data and verified information about health and healthcare not only for laypeople, but also for professionals. Five years ago, Martin Komenda, head of the Department of Data and Technology at the Faculty of Medicine's Institute of Biostatistics and Analysis and a graduate of the Faculty of Informatics at Masaryk University, helped create the National Healthcare Information Portal (NZIP). There, both lay and professional audiences can find verified information about health, life situations, and healthcare. He was also recently appointed coordinator of healthcare data at the Czech Ministry of Health.

article of the month

A team of authors from our faculty, in collaboration with Brno University Hospital and Brno University of Technology, has published the results of an analysis of the use of individually designed protective palatal obturators during intubation of newborns with cleft palate. Intubation of these patients carries a higher risk of damage to oral tissues. The results of the study showed that the use of the obturator did not cause tissue damage, unlike in patients intubated without an obturator. The paper, published in Annals of Medicine, presents an innovative approach combining 3D printing, personalized medical devices, and clinical practice, and contributes to improving the safety of neonatal care.

In the first week of October, the Czech Television program Sama doma focused on connections in neurology and problems that manifest themselves as pain, tics, or body tremors. One of the guests who spoke on the program was Dr Martina Mračková, head physician of the neurology outpatient clinic at the 1st. department of Neurology at the St. Anne´s Unvierstiy Hospital. She explained to viewers the issue of functional neurological disorders and how they differ, for example, from stroke or multiple sclerosis, and how they manifest themselves. let´s introduce

Research Group Translational Immunology The team led by Jan Frič from ICRC focuses on various aspects of the human immune response and how the basic mechanisms of immunity are linked to the development of disorders and pathologies. The primary research topic is the role of the immune response in the progression of sepsis and septic shock, including the study of its long-term consequences. The team also studies the aging of the immune system and characterizes the immunosenescent phenotype in several patient cohorts, including cancer survivors, patients with neurodegenerative diseases, and patients with chronic cardiovascular problems. The group also focuses on 3D models of human mucosal tissues, which allow the study of immune responses in the microenvironment, immune cell signaling, particularly the role of the calcineurin-NFAT pathway in the development of susceptibility to infections, and immunometabolism as a control mechanism of immune responses. Close collaboration with clinicians creates an opportunity to conduct basic research with a strong translational approach from the laboratory to the patient's bedside.

interesting events

What can you look forward to in November? For example, another Research Breakfast, several very interesting conferences, lectures and courses. You can find an overview of all events in the Event Calendar.
