Social safety: respect, trust, and protection

As part of our ongoing series on topics that contribute to a safe environment at our faculty, this time we are focusing on social safety. Our goal is for every employee and student to be able to work, study, and move around the faculty in an environment where they are respected, heard, and protected.
Social safety is one of the fundamental pillars of a safe academic environment.

What is social safety?

Social safety means an environment where the dignity, integrity, and mental well-being of every person is protected. Everyone should have the opportunity to function freely and without fear.

When social safety is lacking, it manifests itself in various forms of disruption—from bullying, discrimination, or inappropriate behavior to abuse of power or sexual harassment. This is one of the most serious violations of personal space and trust.

At the faculty, we strive to make everyone feel safe – regardless of age, gender, origin, sexual orientation, health status, or other personal characteristics. That is why we offer information, support, and, above all, clear procedures on how to proceed if a problem arises.

Sexual harassment: let's name what we must not ignore

Sexual harassment is not always easy to recognize. Sometimes it is disguised as an "innocent joke," a "compliment," or an "awkward comment." However, if the behavior is unwanted, inappropriate, repeated—and especially if it leaves you feeling uncomfortable, insecure, or pressured—it is sexual harassment. It is important to talk about it and take a stand.

Typical manifestations of sexual harassment:

It is not the intention that matters, but the impact. If you feel uncomfortable, you have the right to speak up and ask for the inappropriate behavior to stop.

What can you do if you find yourself in such a situation?

You are not alone. The faculty has a clearly defined support mechanism that protects the dignity of every member of the academic community.

Do not underestimate even "minor" incidents. A timely response protects not only you, but also others.

Why is prevention important?

Preventing sexual harassment and other forms of inappropriate behavior is the foundation of a healthy study and work environment. It protects a space where people can focus on their work, development, and collaboration—without fear, uncertainty, or unwanted pressure.

Supporting prevention means supporting respect, safety, and trust—values that form the basis of a high-quality academic community.
