| Description | Pneumococcus remains the most common cause of respiratory tract diseases, from otitis media to severe community-acquired pneumonia. Invasive pneumococcal infections are the cause of mortality in children worlwide. The manuscript summarizes the latest knowledge about the structure of pneumococcus, pathogenesis, new diagnostic methods and therapy with impact to antibiotic resistence. The effectiveness of polysaccharide and conjugate vaccines in preventing of pneumococcal infections is discussed. |
