Description Diabetes mellitus represents the most clinically significant metabolic disease in the elderly. Most of the elderly patients suffer from type 2 diabetes (up to 95% among those over 70). Hyperglycaemia can, in patients of advanced age, cause only atypical or non-specific symptoms, even if it is high. The prognosis of diabetes in elderly patients is going to closely depend on the degree of compensation and the level of control maintained over the risk factor of ischemic heart disease (hypertension, dyslipidaemia, obesity).
