Description The risk leading to disability or dependence in spotting also increases with the number of comorbidities. Certain pairs disease may increase the risk of disability synergistically. Arthritis and heart diseases coexist with up to 1/5 of the elderly; although the risk of developing disability are 3- to 4-fold higher with any one of them alone, the risk of disability increases 14 times, are present both at the same time. Finally, a serious and common consequence of chronic illness in old age is a physical disability, defined as the presence of difficulties or dependence on other people to carry out daily activities, from basic self-care (toilet and washing a) up to the tasks required to conduct an independent life (shopping, meal preparation, paying bills).
