Description Congenital abnormalities of kidney account for about 20% of all congenital defects. Most of these abnormalities may not in the course of life and frequently are diagnosed incidentally. From a practical standpoint are important abnormalities which are accompanied by chronic renal failure, vesicoureteral reflux or are part of some genetic syndromes. A 17-year-old girl presented to the pediatric department with acute renal failure and hypertension. Further investigation into the cause of these findings caused by a rare renal abnormality: bilateral renal segmental hypoplasia with vesicoureteral reflux or Ask-Upmark syndrome. The etiology of this renal lesion is unknown. Some authors propose congenital malformation, whereas others have found significant correlation with vesicoureteral reflux, incl. chronic pyelonephritis.
