Description Midwifery is one of the oldest health care subjects. In 2003 - 2004 was midwifery education moved to Universities. It takes the form of a three-year bachelor program at medical and health faculties. Educational midwifery programs follow EU legislation as well as Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic’s directions. The possibilities of master’s degree education are limited; it takes the form of follow up specialization. The doctoral degree in the field of midwifery cannot be obtained in the Czech Republic at present. The future of higher degree of academic education in this field is unclear. Current midwifery education in the Czech Republic is at a high level. It fulfils the ICM recommendations in a theoretical and hospital level. Significant reserves are shown in practical training in a primary and community care at the workplaces of private midwives. The important aspects influencing the practice of midwives in the Czech Republic are the dominance of medical prenatal and perinatal care provided by doctors; the care of a midwife being for a long time beyond the standard health services covered by the public health insurance; and the absence of workplaces where midwives would provide their services independently to the full extent of their competencies. There is a possibility for the midwives to become a member of a professional organization. Currently there are three professional organizations of midwives in the Czech Republic. Any of these is not a “chamber” where the membership is obligatory by law; it means that the membership is voluntary. It is thought that this might be the main reason for low membership base.
