Description Pulmonary embolism (PE) is an occlusion of the pulmonary system by loose thrombi, most commonly from the veins of the lower extremities and pelvis. Massive pulmonary embolism is associated with right heart failure and hypotension, defined as systolic blood pressure less than 90 mmHg or a decrease of 40 mmHg despite adequate fluid resuscitation.
