Description Bisphosphonates in the therapy of bone metastases of breast carcinoma. Brest cancer is one of the most frequent female cancers, the incidence of which is increasing on the world scale. This type of cancer very often metastasizes to the bones. That is why bone metastases can be the first symptom of this malignant disease. Bone metastases cause major skeletal complications in the affected women, pain being one of the predominant complaint. The aim of therapy of bone metastases is to slow down the progression of the disease and to improve the quality of live for the patients. Great progress in therapy has been made as a result of the use of bisphosphonates. Inhibition of osteoclast activity is one of the most important effects of bisphosphonates. Bisphosphonates are currently divided into three groups. Therapy of bone metastases represents a serious medical problem. Bisphosphonate therapy should be started immediately after the diagnose has been confirmed.
