Description Once the diagnosis of cardiac angina has been established, there are 2 equally important treatment goals. First, reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality through comprehensive management of the underlying risk factors, including achieving goal blood pressure and glycemic and cholesterol targets, as well as complete smoking cessation, and an exercise program. Agents that modify disease progression and complications in patients with atherosclerosis should also be used, including aspirin in those without contraindications and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors in select patients with coronary artery disease. The second major treatment goal is to reduce anginal symptoms and thereby improve exertional capacity and quality of life. The aim of anti-anginal therapy should be to abolish, or at least greatly reduce, the symptoms of angina through lifestyle changes, medications, and if required coronary revascularization.
