Description The necessity to revise the Atlanta classification, used for over 16 years, resulted from new knowledge and pathophysiology of the disease, clinical course and possibilities of the treatment. Besides the mild and severe form of acute pancreatitis the term moderate form characterized by high morbidity and low mortality has been implemented. This form is without any organ failure. Pancreatic collections are defined more accurately and in this case the term ‘pancreatic abscess’ is not defined. At last the new classification distinctly respects the clinical course of the disease including its double peaked course. The aim of the new classification is the reflection of new knowledge on acute pancreatitis, definition and unification of the disease terminology for all involved doctors.
