| Description | Brain abscess is a rare but very serious and life-threatening infectious disease with an incidence of 2–3 patients per million inhabitants. The source is often a dental infection. A 23-year-old man was admitted with disturbance of consciousness to the emergency. There was made the diagnosis of a secondary purulent meningoencephalitis with epidural empyema and pansinusitis on the left side. In patient history were reported fever, headaches and vomiting. The acute evacuation of the empyema and resection of abscess cavity were done. The source of inflammation was chronic dental periapical infection in maxilla. Patient had poor oral hygiene and multiple radixes. The treatment consists of immediate administration of high doses of intravenous antibiotics, urgent surgical procedures and eradicates all the possible septic foci. There were some complications during the treatment: generalized epileptic fits, right-sided hemiparesis with fatick disorder, thrombosis sigmoideal and transversal sinus. The mortality of brain abscess is 15–25%. It is deterrent, the reason of life-threatening disease is poor oral hygiene in this case, it means unnecessary patient‘s disability with permanent effects reduce a quality of the life. |
