| Description | AIM OF THE STUDY: In this retrospective study we analyse the major indications and diagnosis for arthroscopy after knee joint injuries in children and adolescents. METHODS: 342 knee joint artroscopies were performed and retrospectively evaluated in patiens under 19 years of age. This group included patients with knee joint injurie treated at our department in the 2007- 2011 period. There were 185 boys (54 %) and 157 girls (46 %) with average age 12 years and 8 months. The clinical diagnosis was compared to the arthroscopic diagnosis. RESULTS: The results of our comparative study we can devide into three groups. Clinical diagnosis was fully confirmed in 67 %, partially confermed in 15 % (combined injuries) and clinical diagnosis was wrong in 18 %. In this group arthroscopy revealed lateral meniscus injury above all. Arthroscopy revealed, 17 % osteochondral and cartilage lesions, 16 % patellar dislocations 16 % plica injuries, 14 % medial meniscus injury, 13 % anterior cruciate ligament lesions, 8 % lateral meniscus injury. DISCUSSION: With the number of knee injuries in children and adolescents increasing every year, the role of arthroscopy in their diagnosis and treatment is becoming increasingly important. Some authors report difficulties with the preoperative diagnosis at this age, our results were notably better. CONCLUSSION: Knee arthroscopy is a safe and effective method of a high diagnostic and therapeutic value and its use in children and adolescents should be recommended. |
