Description Oral palonosetron is a new form of this second-generation 5-HT3 receptor antagonist with high affinity to 5-HT3 receptors and long half-life. These properties enable to give one antiemetic dose for the whole cycle of cytotoxic chemotherapy with duration of effect up to 5 days. Palonosetron shares high efficiency in prevention of acute vomiting after moderately and highly emetogenic chemotherapy with older first-generation 5-HT3 receptor antagonists. Moreover, it is more efficient in prevention of vomiting in delayed phase, that is further days after chemotherapy. Significant contribution is also its higher effect in controlling nausea which is generally less influenceable. For these reasons oral palonosetron becomes preferred 5-HT3 receptor antagonist for many patients treated with moderately or highly emetogenic chemotherapy.
