Description Staphylococcus sciuri is a coagulase-negative, novobiocin-resistant species occurring as a commensal of the skin and the mucous membranes of a wide variety of animals but it may be isolated also from humans and human clinical materials. The species was delineated into three subspecies, namely S. sciuri subsp. sciuri, S. sciuri subsp. carnaticus and S. sciuri subsp. rodentium on the basis of ribotyping and certain phenotypic traits. However, the biochemical differentiation of these three subspecies is unreliable because there are no clearly distinguishing traits available and also the differentiation of S. sciuri subspecies using molecular methods is dubitable. The present study was conducted in order to reveal the variability among the S. sciuri population to contribute to the justification of the S. sciuri subspecies taxonomic separation.
