Description Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are severe clinical manifestations of venous thromboembolic disease affecting more than 1.5 million Europeans each year; one third of these patients die. The most disturbing fact is that 90% of these patients suffer from sudden embolism with no proven pre-existing source of pulmonary embolism. This is the main reason supporting the development of preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic methods for venous thromboembolic disease, including score systems and clinical algorithms for various groups of patients.
