Description The goal of the study was to find out whether the educational materials for patients who have undergone the implantation of a vascular prosthesis in lower extremities or abdominal aorta are of high quality, understandable and usable for patients. The evaluation included educational materials in written form – two brochures for patients prior to the surgery, one brochure for patients after the surgery and an information map. The PEMAT (Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool) was chosen for the evaluation of materials in printed form. The tool was double translated to ensure the correctness of the translation. The materials were assessed by 35 medical and nursing experts in vascular surgery who participate in patient education. The materials were assessed as good, understandable and usable for education. The educational map, which serves patients during all their hospitalization and provides them with information about the course of their hospitalization, was evaluated as the best item. Good printed materials should be a part of all patient educations. Materials the patients are provided with should be understandable and patients should be able to use the information included in educational materials during their treatment. Before being used in practice, educational materials should be assessed by a tool evaluating their quality.
