| Description | Post-operative nausea and vomiting is one of the major problems in postoperative care. The incidence rate is about 30% with prophylaxis therapy administered and up to 80% without it. Post-operative nausea and vomiting is associated with a dyscomfort that is feared more than postoperative pain by the patients. The etiology of post-operative nausea and vomiting is multifactorial, including anesthetic and surgical technique and individual patient sensitivity. Post-operative nausea and vomiting is preventable with a multimodal approach involving preoperative risk assessment, appropriate anesthetic and surgical approach preferring mini-invasive surgery and neuroaxial blockade, and combined anti-emetic drug therapy. If the prevention fails, rapid and effective therapy is necessary. With the rising level of scientific knowledge and availability of generic drugs, adequate prevention of post-operative nausea and vomiting should become standard practice in perioperative care. |
