Description Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and usually fatal form of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia. IPF is caused by chronic damage to the alveolar epithelium, leading to abnormal tissue repair and profound changes in the alveolar structure. The similarity between IPF and lung cancer (LC) is not limited to the poor prognosis of both diseases; there are also some common pathogenetic mechanisms and risk factor. The aim of this paper is to highlight certain similarities between IPF and LC. Cases illustrating the coincidence of IPF and LC are also reported. © 2018 China National Publications Import and Export (Group) Corporation. All rights reserved.
