| Description | Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases are very common in the population of developed countries. Various studies have confirmed that LDL cholesterol is the only causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Recently, the European Society of Cardiology and European Society for Atherosclerosis issued new common recommendations for the management of dyslipidemia. The treatment of all patients with hypercholesterolemia is based on changes in their lifestyle, which can be extended by functional foods containing plant sterols and stanols or red yeast rice extracts if necessary. When drug therapy is indicated, the basic drugs are always statins alone or in combination with ezetimibe (also in the form of fixed-dose combinations). New and very potent hypolipidemic therapy are PCSK9 inhibitors. |
