Description Failure of the basic life function, which is respiration, can be replaced by artificial ventilation (UPV) in critical conditions. UPV will help keep paO2 and p aCO2 within acceptable limits, it does not cure the underlying disease. In the Czech Republic, a patient on artificial lung ventilation is typically hospitalized in anesthesiology and resuscitation units, and in the world in intensive care units (ICU).
