| Description | Acute Liver Failure (ALF) and acute decompensation of chronic liver lesions (ACLF) are life-threatening situations. Due to the fact that the liver performs a number of metabolic, homeostatic, detoxifying and immunological functions, their sudden involvement manifests itself on many levels. The main symptoms of acute liver dysfunction are jaundice, coagulopathy, hypoglycemia, and in advanced ALF then encephalopathy. According to the time interval between the development of jaundice and encephalopathy, ALF is divided into fulminant (hyperacute), acute and subacute (see Table 10.1). ACLF is defined as acute decompensation of otherwise stabilized chronic liver disease (compensated liver cirrhosis). |
