Description This summary research report presents the findings from an experimental study concerned with the effect of framing information about Covid-19 on people’s feelings of personal and societal threat posed by Covid-19, their evaluations of its risks, their emotional experiences and changes to their behaviour in response to the Covid-19 epidemic. The study was conducted online during the first wave of the pandemic in May 2020 and was evaluated at the Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. It investigated the ways in which the pandemic was framed, and found that some of these frames were considered manipulative and others not. The main finding was that the experiment participants already had deeply set opinions on the pandemic and it was difficult to change these by rhetorical devices alone. Differences between the various framing devices were demonstrated. The study found that subjects were dissatisfied with some aspects of the government’s dealing with the epidemic (chiefly as far as its economic impacts were concerned). The report includes recommendations for the management of future epidemic situations.
