Description The transport efficiency of an ablation cell is a value indicating the ratio between the amount of detected analyte and the total amount of analyte contained in the sample being analysed; it is a parameter indicating the quality of the transfer of analyte from the ablation cell to the detector. In particular, nanoparticles (NPs), which appear as sharp peaks of high signal intensity in the time-lapse signal intensity of a given m/z, are a suitable way of determining transport efficiency, while at low NP number concentrations, one peak corresponds to one nanoparticle. In this case, it is sufficient to compare the number of NPs contained in the analysed sample with the number of peaks in the time-lapse signal intensity record. In our approach, a diluted suspension of 50nm gold ultra-uniform nanoparticles was deposited on a silicon and glass plate coated with gelatin using a piezoelectric pipettor. The number of nanoparticles on the silicon plate was determined using SEM while the nanoparticles deposited on the gelatin-coated glass plate were placed in an ablation cell, and the entire dried droplet containing the NPs was ablated. By comparing the number of NPs obtained by SEM and NIR LA ICP MS, we determined the transport efficiency to be 83 %.
