Description Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic and slowly progressing disease. The possibilities of its compensation deteriorate gradually over the years, despite all the efforts of doctors using modern diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Its medical and society-wide significance has been increasing in recent decades both due to the increasing prevalence of DM and the frequency and severity of late complications, which increases with the increase in average life expectancy. The overall effect of comorbidities on the course of the disease in elderly diabetics is fundamental. Increasing age in DM is also associated with more frequent hospitalization and longer stays in bed in general.
