Description This article provides a brief outline of the cases of acute abdomem the incidence of which is significantly higher in older people and which pose the greatest risk to the lives of those who suffer them. It is the first of 3 planned articles, which aim to highlight critical situations that a doctor caring for senior patients may encounter in relation to the gastrointestinal tract. In this review, the authors analyse acute abdomen cases resulting from inflammation or ileus in terms of etiopathogenesis, clinical image, progress, diagnostics, treatment and prognosis with regard to the specific characteristics and risks caused by old age.
