Description Risks and benefits of the treatment of cardiovascular disease with medication in seniors. The authors analyse the situation in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in older patients, which is not entirely satisfactory, especially as regards indication for hypolipidemic medication. The article also analyses individual recommended medicine groups and associated risks that may affect older patients - in anslyses the Angiotensis-Converting Enzyme inhibitors, the positive effect of this group on endothelial dysfunction with an emphasis on the danger of hyperkalemia, the group of anti-aggregantion preparations, the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and other kinds of bleeding and the possibility to use other types of antiaggregants, the group of beta blockers and their bradycardic effect and the possibilities for serious interactions with other kinds of prescribed medication, the group of statins and their positive effect on endothelial dysfunction and the risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis. Other groups of cardiovascular medications that are discussed are calcium channel blockers, diuretics and digoxin. The article concludes with a table of the possible undesirable clinical side effects of the cardiovascular medication most frequently prescribed to older patients.
