Description The patellofemoral joint is a very important part of the knee joint and the extensor apparatus of the lower extremity. However, in spite of high incidence, it is not always easy to identify the cause of pain and to treat the patellofemoral joint disease correctly. Similarly, causes and characteristics of the isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis have not yet been correctly understood. Three major etiological groups can be identified as: 1) primary arthritis, mostly in cases with patellofemoral dysplasia, 2) post-instability arthritis, and 3) posttraumatic arthritis. The number of treatment methods of patellofemoral osteoarthritis is rather limited. Although prosthetic replacement seems a logical treatment option, it still remains a controversial solution. The same applies to indication of total endoprothesis in case of a patellofemoral osteoarthritis.
