The research group investigates the molecular pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications, with a primary emphasis on the development of diabetic kidney disease. The team explores mechanisms such as gluco- and lipotoxicity, the impact of reactive metabolites, alterations in thiamine metabolism and the pentose phosphate pathway, including the genetic determinants of these processes. Recently, their work has expanded to include gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), focusing on predicting postpartum glucose intolerance and studying the effects of maternal GDM on offspring development, as well as examining how the diabetic milieu may influence tumour development, including colorectal cancer
