Scientific careers in the Czech Republic have long been plagued by inequality. Although women make up a significant proportion of undergraduate and doctoral students, their representation in senior research and leadership positions is growing slowly and structural inequalities persist. This situation is confirmed by available data on the position of women in academic science (VědaVýzkum.cz – Postavení žen ve vědě).
In this context, the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University is committed to the principles of a fair, inclusive, and responsible working environment that promotes equal opportunities, respect, and quality working conditions for both employees and students. The faculty is actively involved in the preparation and implementation of Masaryk University's Gender Equality Plan (GEP MU), which is a tool for systematic improvement in the areas of transparent rules, work-life balance, and equal representation. GEP MU is based on the conclusions of regular gender audits carried out at individual university departments.
At the faculty, equality is understood as equal visibility, status, and involvement regardless of gender, age, family situation, or other individual characteristics. This approach is also reflected in specific measures supporting the reconciliation of work, study, and parenthood, such as flexible and reduced working hours, a barrier-free environment, and support for parents with young children. Employees and students also have access to clear information and support programs through the Employee Portal and faculty websites.
Part of the faculty's culture is also a commitment to a safe and respectful academic environment. The Safe Faculty initiative emphasizes dignity, respect, and responsibility in mutual relationships and focuses on preventing undesirable behavior, resolving conflicts, and supporting the personal safety and mental health of all members of the academic community.
On this occasion, we wish all women and girls in science, as well as those who are just considering a career in science, sufficient support, professional satisfaction, quality conditions, and the joy of knowledge. Science benefits from diversity of perspectives, and we are convinced that an environment based on equality and respect is one of the key prerequisites for its quality.
