Description Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a group of disorders triggered by endothelial injury or dysfunction. TMA is characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and ischemic organ injury due to thrombosis in microvasculature. The most often damaged organs are kidneys. TMA is observed as primary or most frequently secondary, acquired form – especially linked to shiga-toxin producing E. coli infection. Understanding of epidemiology, pathophysiology, laboratory and clinical signs and differential diagnosis is crucial for early and on-time specific diagnostic approach of this life-threatening diseases. The text below is a recommendation of the Pediatric Nephrology Section of the Czech Pediatric Society and is based on the current recommendations of experts from the European and International Society for Pediatric Nephrology.
